New World Record at the Danube Tower
On June 10, 2024, Lower Austrian ultrarunner Rainer Predl set a new world record by running 100 kilometers in 2,500 laps around the platform of the Vienna Danube Tower. He achieved this impressive feat in 10 hours and 51 minutes.
Predl started his run at 9 AM, first climbing the 779 steps to the platform at 155 meters high, where the actual record attempt began. During the run, he changed direction every five kilometers to counteract the one-sided strain and dizziness.
He was supported by a five-member team providing moral support and refreshments.
This extraordinary run was not only a sporting highlight but also a charity event. The funds raised were donated to the Sterntalerhof Children's Hospice, for which Rainer Predl has been an ambassador for years.
With his new record, Predl significantly undercut the previous best mark set by Markus Köhle, who needed 12 hours and 45 minutes for the same distance in Stuttgart in 2018.
The run at the Danube Tower is another chapter in Predl's impressive career, characterized by numerous extreme and unusual runs. The Lower Austrian is already planning his next spectacular project: the North Pole Marathon.
After the run, Predl was relieved and happy: “It was a fun story and a great experience. I wouldn’t do it again though,” laughed the 34-year-old.
